The story of the Dementia Dragon’s Tribe is a story of denial, shame, guilt, and fiery anger over a medical diagnosis and a dementia label. It’s all the fear, confusion, chaos, and unknown darkness of all of our fears that come together to torment us when we are labeled as having dementia. We must learn how to accept this Dementia Dragon for what it is. We must lot all learn how to do the Dementia D A N C E moment to moment, with people who we care for as Care Partners, not as enemies. We must learn how to embrace our own Dementia Dragon with compassion and kindness for our human weakness.
Dementia DANCE stands for
D Don’t argue
A Accept the disability for what it is
N Nurture Yourself first
C Creative solutions exist for every problem
E Enjoy the moment
The attack of the Dementia Dragon cannot be single person’s lonely war, or you will be burned alive by your own fears from childhood. It takes a Team Approach to manage our darkest fears in the middle of the night, because that’s when all the demon fears come alive and are ready to attack us in our sleep.
Our Dementia Dragon’s Tribe is a family of choice that includes professional caregivers and volunteers. We must all be transformed into Care Partners as a new “Family of Choice”. As tribal members we must respect the heart centered nature of serving other people who may never acknowledge the sacrifices we make for them or their family. Because of the violent, often angry mood swings of someone disabled by Dementia, many people are unable to emotionally face or are unwilling to handle all the dogs of Hades unleashed by this dreaded, crippling, life stealing disease.
So, to that end we are forming a new Family of Choice of professional Care Partners, researchers, doctors, nurses, lawyers, bankers, insurance agents, etc. we’re coming together to help co-create and build Dementia Friendly Communities, where elder voices matter. This is an interdisciplinary, intergenerational, cross-cultural approach to individual healthcare and planning that’s based on openly sharing our stories, good, bad, and ugly.
We are building a crowd-sourced approach to dementia care that is heart centered on both Care Partners with family and community support as our backup. We believe that by using our scarce resources wisely and putting people first, this will help us develop a Public Awareness Campaign to dramatize the devastating nature of the fiery dementia Dragon’s we all must face together.
Our tribal focus on research and development efforts regarding brain research and Caregiving for families within Dementia Friendly Communities must be a 50-50 proposition, to help suffering Care partners, families, and communities who have to pay for it!
No single person or organization can kill this terminal illness or destroy the stigma of the Dementia Dragon of fear of the unknown, but we can find peace, joy, and love for human beings one moment at a time. We believe that every human being deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, as a unique individual, worthy of love and forgiveness. In the end, we are teaching future generations of elders how to survive and thrive together by focusing on abilities, not disabilities and that’s our real legacy story. In the end, the gift we want to leave our children is a message of hope and practical help with proper resources. And in this way we also honor our elders as vital, resilient community members who can also volunteer to help build a more tolerant community of human beings that we can all be proud of.
So please join us today and become a member of our Dementia Dragon’s Tribe. As CEO and Tribal Chief it’s my role and job to welcome every individual, family, and community into this new family of choice for the meaning and value they have to offer. The Dementia label can be a gift or a curse, it’s your choice, but you’ll never be alone again and that’s my personal promise to all members. Thanks for your attention, please call and let’s get to know each other as friends.
